RED RIBBON WEEK is This Week

Tomorrow: Wear everything backwards! (school appropriate)

Thursday: Wear your favorite team jersey!

Friday: Wear pink!

It's Red Ribbon Week! If you didn't know, RRW is a week-long demonstration of our intolerance for drugs in our schools, workplaces, and communities. The movement started almost 40 years ago in California in honor of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a DEA agent who had uncovered a massive marijuana operation in Northern Mexico, but was kidnapped and murdered by the drug cartel he was about to expose. Shortly after his death, his high school friend and a Congressman launched Camarena Clubs in Kiki's California hometown, and club members wore red ribbons to pledge their commitment to lead drug-free lives, honoring the sacrifices made by Kiki and others on behalf of all Americans. Today RRW is the oldest and largest drug-prevention awareness campaign.

Parents, you can participate by talking to your children about drugs and the dangers of substance abuse. Children of parents who talk to them regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't; however only 25% of teens report having had these conversations, according to Youthfirstinc.org.

Talk to your students and take the pledge today! https://www.redribbon.org/pledge

FOOD FOR FAMILIES

Katy ISD Partners in Education is launching its annual Food for Families campaign, inviting the Katy ISD community to help provide a little extra support to families during the winter break. Campuses identify families who would benefit from the program, while community and corporate donations fund $75 grocery gift cards that are personally delivered by campus staff. For a family facing a difficult season, that gift card can mean more than groceries—it can mean one less worry, the freedom to choose what their family needs most and a reminder that their community cares.

Help us turn a gift card into something more.
